A Servant’s Understanding

Arad was the language Adramalech gifted to the elves: simple and lacking nuance, it’s a poor language for discussing heady ideas or mighty philosophies.

As a slave language, Arad was designed to limit its ability to convey abstract ideas. It’s an excellent language for issuing commands: its adjectives and verbs conjugate cleanly, minimizing the possibility of confusion. A fluent speaker can’t be misunderstood when dealing in concrete terms.

Today, very few elves speak Arad, which they consider beneath them. Many Southrons, however, use it as their primary language – in a different age, every Southron would have learned it in order to command their servants. In gained ascendancy as their other language, Adramala, lost prestige due to its ties to Adramalech’s priesthood.
